Career and Technical Education is Perhaps Better than a Traditional Degree

Students should consider taking the career and technical education route to higher education instead of spending years earning a traditional college degree. Spending less time and money on an education that actually provides relevant training in skills employers want is invaluable compared to a liberal arts degree that doesn’t really result in many tangible skills.

Take a closer look at the rise in career and technical education programs in high schools around the United States. These training course programs enable students to graduate with skills they can employ upon graduation. Some programs result in certifications or college credit that can be added to a new graduate’s resume right away. If students choose to continue their college educations, they can often apply their high school CTE courses toward college credit, which saves them tuition and time.

One of the benefits of CTE is that it provides students with hands-on practice. This encourages students to become more engaged in subjects like math and science, states Sophie Quinton of The Atlantic in a December 2013 article. Students see concepts in action. STEM – science, technology, engineering, and math – jobs are increasing in the United States, and students can often snag one with a good salary with a solid career and technical education. CTE is becoming so important, in fact, that some states, such as Georgia and Texas, have passed legislation that highlight CTE.

Courses in coding, computer science, web and app development, and other IT fields benefit students. They are able to get associate’s or bachelor’s degrees with CTE courses that open the door to good jobs. Certificate programs from vocational and technical colleges also help students find employment within months.

CTE is a viable alternative to a four-year degree with limited opportunities for hands-on training for students interested in finding a job in fields like IT or healthcare. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the training they need to find work right after graduation. They are equipped with the knowledge and skills to settle into their new jobs quickly, all without having to face the intense competition for scarce jobs that students who graduate with, say, a bachelor’s degree in psychology often face.
